Fifteen talented local actors (aged 10 to 17) are bringing the Bard to life with a rollicking romp through the life, times and works of William Shakespeare in Driftwood Theatre School’s (DTS) upcoming All the World’s a Stage.

“Our young actors have accomplished the impossible,” raves instructor/director Ingrid Bilton. “They have not only mastered a new language, they have learned to speak ‘trippingly on the tongue’ – a lost art, to be sure. I am so impressed by the courage and tenacity of our students in tackling these iconic roles from Shakespeare’s greatest plays. I am truly amazed at the outstanding quality of their work.”

The sumptuous sets (built Doug Ives and painted by Mudito and Bodhi Drope), along with costumes from Carol Thompson and the Driftwood Players’ Costume Shoppe, make this production a feast for the eyes.

But stage manager Sandi McGinnis notes it is the young actors who really make the production sparkle. “We thought we hit the pinnacle with last years Alice in Wonderland, but our current production of All the World’s a Stage has raised the bar for theatrical and ensemble work.”

The general public are invited to the two public performances Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets ($15 adult and $8 youth) are available at the Blackberry Shop, Laedeli, giggle ’n bloom, and at the door. For info go to www.driftwoodplayers.ca/dts.htm.

DTS will take All the World’s a Stage on the road in May, offering free performances at schools across the Sunshine Coast. The tour is made possible with the financial support of the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation and the Sunshine Coast Regional District, who are helping to bring the magic of live theatre to local youth.

Driftwood Theatre School presents:
DIRECTING FOR DUMMIES

March 2 ..... 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
March 3 .....    1:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
March 10 (optional) ..... 1:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
St. Bart’s Hall, Gibsons

This three-day workshop is designed for theatre buffs who have always wanted to try their hand at directing, but felt they lacked the necessary skills to take on a project.

Bob Hunt and Ingrid Bilton, both respected Theatre Arts instructors and accomplished directors, have fashioned a beginner’s workshop that focuses on the ABC’s of Directing. “We want to take the mystery out of directing,” Bilton says, “and to instill enthusiasm and confidence.” Bob Hunt wants everyone to know that this is an activity-based workshop: “Students will be participating in a wide variety of valuable directing exercises while learning some fundamental and utterly practical routines.”

Topics covered include: Factors to Consider in Selecting a Play, Creating a Director’s Script, Establishing a Team Atmosphere, the Director’s Role: Dictator or Collaborator, the Director/Stage Manager Relationship, Approaches to the Audition, Blocking the Play, the Director’s Toolkit: Creating Strong Performances, Troubleshooting, Managing a Tech Rehearsal, Almost Home: The Dress Rehearsal, The Run Has Begun: Now What?!

Following the initial weekend, students will have the opportunity on Sunday, March 10 to work “hands-on” as a director under the mentorship of our two instructors. Those who participate in the March 10th session will be asked to bring: a scene of their own choosing, sufficient copies of the scene for actors, and a carefully selected cast of actors. (Some local actors will be on hand if casting is not complete at the outset of the final day’s activities). A showcase of these directing projects will cap off the afternoon.

Admission to the “Directing for Dummies” workshop is by donation, (although a minimum of $35/person is needed to cover the cost of the Hall rental)

Driftwood Theatre School
welcomes John Conway

"Teaching and performing theatre for me is a passion. I eat, live and breath performing my art!" says John Conway, the newest addition to the Driftwood Theatre School teaching staff. "If it's not fun, it's not worth doing!"

The renowned actor, director and producer (last seen as Drosselmeyer in the sold-out run of The Nutcracker) brings decades of experience, coupled with an infectious energy and love of performing that is sure to inspire students. " I am committed to being 100% present every class," he says, "with high octane intensity to ignite the fire in your heart for the art. I find it helps to break down concepts into their simplest terms, so that all drama skills become achievable. Above all else, I make the course practical to the industry, so if the desire is there, a path is established for students to successfully live out their dreams."

Registrar Sandi McGinnis is thrilled to welcome someone of John's talent and stature to the Driftwood Theatre School. He has studied theatre with the Second City Fire Hall, University of Victoria, VVC Studio 58, Tuba Theatre Vancouver, Douglas College Theatre Program, UCLA Musical Theatre Program and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in California. Ingrid Bilton, a three-year instructor with DTS, is equally enthusiastic: "John was able to substitute teach for us in the Teen Drama class last semester, and students are still excited about the experience! We are already getting calls from local actors asking about John's program."

The Driftwood Theatre School's upcoming classes (held at St. Bart's Hall in Gibsons) include Adult Drama with John Conway, Creative Drama for 8 - 10 year olds and Teen Drama with Instructor Tracy Lloyd, and Discovering Theatre (10 - 13 years) with Ingrid Bilton.

Register Sat. Jan 12 from 11 AM to 1 PM at St. Bart's Hall in Gibsons or contact Registrar Sandi McGinnis at 604-886-0143 or registrar.dts@uniserve.com.
